How to make the most of your cake tasting…

The cake tasting is traditionally supposed to be the most fun part of your wedding planning. Movies always show happy brides sitting contentedly among hundreds of samples with their nearest and dearest – and why shouldn’t it be like that? But before you come out cake tasting, there are a few things you can do to really make the experience into a movie moment!

Choose the right cake company

There’s no point tasting all these wonderful flavours if you’re not a fan of a cake company’s style and designs. Narrow your choices down to two or three before you go cake tasting so that when you find the perfect flavour, you have your dream design to match.

Eat a light meal

Don’t come to a cake tasting on a completely empty stomach – you don’t want to give yourself a headache with too much sugar. Equally, don’t come having had a large meal. Make sure you’ve left plenty of room for dessert but that you have enough stamina to try lots of different flavours – why not?

Have a “must-try” list

Cake tasting is a great balancing act. While you don’t want to restrict yourself too much by convincing yourself you need to have a traditional fruitcake, you also don’t want to confuse yourself by trying every flavour under the sun – in our consultations alone we have 34 flavours to choose from, which can leave brides spoiled for choice. Think of your immediate family and their likes and dislikes and narrow down your list of flavours to between five and ten.

Forget the diet

While we cater for all kinds of dietary requirements, we advise brides to forget any wedding diets when they walk in the door. The last thing you need when eating delicious cake is to feel guilty – you only get to go cake tasting once (or twice, or three times, depending on your short list) so enjoy the experience and worry about the wedding diet tomorrow.

Bring the right people

It’s best only to bring one or two people with you (we advise that at least one of them is the groom!) as too many cooks in a kitchen can, again, get very confusing. Bring people who are going to have fun with it, don’t bring someone who doesn’t have a sweet tooth or who isn’t a big foodie – and make sure you trust their opinion. You wouldn’t take someone unreliable dress shopping, and your cake shouldn’t be any less important – at least we think so!

Have fun!

Yes, that’s the whole point isn’t it – the planning experience is supposed to be fun, fun, fun, but somewhere along the line somebody decided it needs to be stressful. We offer private and lengthy consultations for just that reason – we want our brides and grooms walking out of our shop with a big smile on their face having had a really great time!

Ooh, bringing the right people is a big one, great advice. If I would have gone on my own to my cake tasting I would have got any old cake because I love all sweet things indiscriminately – but most people I know have finer tastes! So I brought my really fussy friend and she helped steer me into towards a choice that more people would like 🙂

Fantastic cakes.. The one with roses is really impressive, I always wonder how much patience they have to do every single pieces. It is perfect for an Indian wedding
